Monticello Interactives
Multiscreen Narrative and Interactive Projections
Small Design Firm created two interactive installations for the new visitor center at Monticello. The Boisterous Sea is a multi screen installation about Thomas Jefferson's ideas on Liberty in the context of American history. The top screens display a half hour program of images and text. Bits of typography rain down onto the bottom screens, where visitors can touch them to explore stories related to the content above.

The Words Lobby is a reactive projection that celebrates the writings of Thomas Jefferson. The piece includes 183 quotations from Jefferson and his contemporaries on a range of subjects. Visitors stand on selected bricks to trigger the release of Jefferson's writings. The projected type moves mechanically out onto the floor, inspired by Jefferson's Cipher Wheel , along the lines of the bricks and up onto the wall, where the quotes can be read.
